Function:

Responsible for the operation of the Branch Service Department, including supervising mechanics, soliciting and developing service business, controlling expenses, handling customer complaints and keeping the Branch General Manager advised on the overall operation of the department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop specific department plans:

  • For prospecting new accounts.

  • Following up on existing and inactive customers.

  • Establishing goals for soliciting business by phone, in person and by mail.

  • Direct and monitor the estimating of labor and material costs.

  • Oversee the origination of all shop work orders.

  • Negotiate special labor rates on large deals as needed.

  • Maintain Company targets for operating ratio and income per hour.

  • Review shop backlog and floor schedule.

  • Advise customers of problems or delays.

  • Ensure that labor and material costs on completed work orders properly reflectwork performed.

  • Maintain the quality and quantity of work.

  • Establish a system to survey customer opinion and service needs.

  • Investigate any product or service complaints.

  • Develop a list of all local competitors.

  • Know their strengths, weaknesses, selling rates, number of personnel, customers, etc

  • Review budget control sheets.

  • Maintain company goals for expense hours, rework, and work in process.

  • Assist the Branch General Manager in monthly Operations letter and preparation of budgets or forecasts.

  • Ensure proper recovery of scrap, of scrap income, and miscellaneous supplies

    expense.

  • Investigate and research new products or services that improve efficiency, reduce costs, or enhance customer satisfaction.

  • Ensure compliance with Company Safety and Environmental Protection directives, OSHA and other Federal and local agencies.

  • Conduct building and shop inspections with members of the Safety Committee.

  • Complete the checklist and correct defects as necessary.

  • Conduct safety meetings and process reports for accidents or injuries.

  • Establish high standards for housekeeping in the shop and yard areas.

  • Perform periodic inspections to ensure compliance.

  • Qualifications/Knowledge:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior management of a service department preferred
  • Knowledge of welding and mechanical principles
  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Prior P & L responsibility preferred
  • Prior sales experience preferred
  • Personal Contacts:

  • Daily communication with customers and various employees at all management levels.

  • Weekly contact with vendors for technical support and training on new products.

  • Occasional contact with insurance adjusters and Wabash Warranty Department.

  • Solicitation of new vendors for product services and business.

  • Develop program to maintain condition and appearance of all service vehicles.

  • Inspect, care for, and preserve equipment.

  • Direct the hiring, supervising, evaluating, and training of mechanics and other service personnel.

  • Set performance standards for tasks, jobs and roles of employees.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and support.
  • Ensure conformance to personnel policies and other internal regulations.

  • Schedule vacations, maintain attendance records and conduct performance reviews for service personnel.

  • Other duties as assigned by General Manager/Supervisor.
