The RN utilizes nursing skills and techniques, of varying degrees of complexity, to provide 24 hour a day acute medical and nursing care to adult Veterans of all ages who requires Intravenous therapy close observation of acute medical and surgical conditions, respiratory support (including oxygen therapy and nebulizer treatments), and support for acute withdrawal from alcohol. Telemetry is utilized for patients who require continuous cardiac monitoring but who are otherwise hemodynamically stable. The nurse is accountable for promoting patients safety, continuity/quality of care and general well-being of the patient. The Medical Supply Technician is a member of the SPS/Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) Team and provides assistance in day to day operations for the Surgical Operating Room, Dental Clinic, Outpatient Clinics, and Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing Service participates with all areas of the hospital in planning, processing, and providing critical and semi-critical reusable medical equipment (RME) for patient care. The technician's assignment will be subject to rotation as needed in the Sterile Processing Department.Major duties and responsibilities include: Determines the proper technique used to decontaminate and disinfect all critical and semi-critical RME; Reprocesses all critical and semi-critical RME; Inspects all processed items for patient and employee safety noting that all gross contamination has been removed; Processes instrument trays per instrumentation inventory lists, arranging instruments in the trays in a correct manner; Assembles a full range of surgical instrumentation trays from simple sets of four or five instruments to very complex sets of up to and sometimes greater than 150 instruments; Decontaminates and reprocesses a variety of complex, delicate, and costly endoscopes - disassembling, processing, and determining the appropriate methods for sterilization; Receives contaminated supplies, and inspects items for damage to ensure equipment is in good working condition; Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and use of ultrasonic equipment; Loads and operates sterilizers such as steam, low temperature H2O2, and gas ethylene oxide (EtO); Monitors performance of sterilizers for quality control by conducting bacteriological tests; Receives sterilized trays, sets, and packs from sterilizers; Performs and documents daily tests on Sterile Processing Service equipment, and Performs other related duties as assigned.
